2012 is shaping up to be a year of excess, not just in our worryingly cocoa-heavy food habit (we’re still behaving like its Easter) but also when it comes to extravagant beauty trends. Case in point: false eyelashes. Nothing new – we’ve been giving our lashes a helping hand for centuries, however we may have just found the holy grail of lash appendage in the form of these delicately extravagant falsies from Paperself. Inspired by the Chinese art of paper cutting, these decadent eyelashes can be worn as a full strip or, use the smaller individual paper designs (we particularly like the horses) to adorn the outer corners of your eyelid for a playfully coquettish look. Yep that’s right, the once torturous activity of perfecting a ballerina bun has now become a quick fix solution to the bad hair day, an instant remedy to the thin haired victim and the saviour for the late to work. Clap your hands and say a big thank you to our favourite multi-task accessory.

Simple steps for the perfect buns:

Find a sock that has become a lone ranger since the trip to the washing machine
Trim the ends off, and start rolling it- a perfect donut should be starting to form.
Put hair in mid to high pony, and secure with hair tie.
Pull pony tail through donut
Tease hair and wrap around donut- secure all flyways with bobby pins
Make all the girls at work jealous with your perfectly formed ballerina bun

The dip-dye. Yes, this may have been the term given to our two-toned hair for years (less fashion hair more major root-regrowth) but this season the beauty industry’s apparent obsession with My Little Pony candy-dipped hair ends is back on, with the dip-dye showing no signs of fading away.

Seen on the models walking Miuccia Prada’s AW12 show at Milan Fashion Week, where tawny crowns gave way to whitened ends as well as on the new breed of Hollywood elite – think Kate Bosworth’s mermaid tips last year and more recently Chloe Moretz faded pink ends, this trend translates as easily from the catwalk to the high street. Before you start precariously dipping your tresses in bleach, try Kevin Murphy’s colour bug, £12.95, which comes in purple, pink and orange so you can dabble in dip-dye without the long-term commitment. Follow the lead of New York Fashion Queens Jason Wu, Prabal Gurung and Derek Lam and line your lids with bright greens and purples. If you’re more of a Balenciaga or Giambattista lady not to worry, reinvigorate the old smoky eye and switch your black liner to a white shadow and watch your eyes pop.

Okay we all knew something was stirring when Queen Bee Beyonce named her first born Blue, and right we were. Suddenly eye lids all over were transformed during Spring/Summer London Fashion week 2011 sporting shades of the once forgotten colour. A rainbow of blue shades were on show during spring/summer fashion week, Louise Gray models updated the cat eye with a slick of blue liner, Pringle of Scotland and Michael van der Ham went for the subtle approach with a light working of blue inners of the eyes. Whatever the application, the message was delivered loud and clear: blue is the new black.

Fast forward to Autumn/Winter and the blues have spread. We fell in love with the teal nails seen on models at Holly Fulton’s LFW show and Erdem’s dark and sexy Navy Ombre nail concoction, and the piece de resistance, Katie Perry’s Smurf inspired hairdo unveiled at Paris Fashion Week. Indulge this trend and prove once and for all that blue no longer belongs to the boys.
