Travel: Colourful Cartagena

It’s that time of year when everyone is looking for a little holiday escape to the sun. And so the ever-important question must be asked- city-break or seaside? Well, if you want a little bit of both, with friendly people and a ton of culture mixed in, we would recommend a little jaunt down to Cartagena, Colombia.

The city has been making a big come back as of late, and more and more travelers are realizing that Cartagena is not only safe, but also warm and welcoming. In fact, the airline Jet-Blue recently added a direct flight from New York City, so now it’s quasi-convenient to get to as well.

We went for a wedding earlier in the year and had an amazing time. We stayed at the Hotel Charleston, and the wedding was held at the Sofitel Santa Clara. Both hotels were beautiful and have fantastic pools for sun-lounging. Make sure to enjoy a cocktail in the courtyard at the Charleston before taking a horse-drawn carriage ride around the city.

During the day, make sure you take some time to walk the perimeter of the old wall, and stop and enjoy the sunset from one of the bars on the top.

In the mood to shop? Just hit the streets! The vendors all around the city sell colourful purses and amazing jewelry containing incredible shells and beads.

There’s one place you must eat when you are in Cartagena, and that’s El Vitrola, which has been the city’s most popular restaurant for ages, and the second you take a bite of their cuisine you’ll see why. There is also live music and a great wine list.

We can’t wait to get back to this beautiful, colourful, city!
